Summer Ball Destroys Routine and Recovery

Most players don’t realize how much the structure of school ball protects them.

In high school and college, there’s rhythm: set days for games, recovery windows, and coaches who manage pitch loads with long-term goals in mind.

In summer? That rhythm disappears.

Leagues overbook games to get ahead of rainouts. That means rescheduled doubleheaders, unpredictable matchups, and zero recovery strategy. One week you throw on three days’ rest. The next, you sit for seven. Then you’re suddenly back on the mound for three days straight in a tournament weekend.

It’s not development. It’s exposure overload.

Pitching Three Days in a Row Is a Red Flag

Let’s be clear: three days in a row on the mound is a hard no.

It doesn’t happen in high school. It doesn’t happen in college. But it happens in summer ball because no one’s thinking about your long-term health. They’re just trying to survive the schedule.

Even two days in a row comes with risk—especially if the pitch counts aren’t tracked. You might throw 15 pitches on Friday and come back for 40 more on Saturday. That adds up. Fast.

You’ve got to know when to hit the brakes.

Use Your Parents to Create Boundaries

If you’re not comfortable speaking up, lean on your parents. Summer coaches aren’t looking to start fights. Have your mom or dad call and say you’ve got work or a family obligation. In summer ball, that’s all it takes.

You’re not letting anyone down. You’re protecting the only arm you’ve got.

You only get five seasons to play four. Don’t let a poorly managed summer take one away.

You’re Not Making the Big Leap This Summer

There’s a false belief that summer is where you make your big leap. That you’re going to go from 85 to 90. That this showcase will change everything.

But development doesn’t happen that way.

You don’t gain 5 MPH in eight weeks. You don’t transform your career in one tournament. What you can do is stay healthy, stay sharp, and build consistency outing by outing.

That’s what creates real results when fall comes around.
