Are You Choosing a Team to Play — or to Develop?

If your goal is to make a roster or earn a role next spring, your summer team needs to do more than give you at-bats. It needs to help develop your weaknesses into strengths.

What’s one specific skill you know you need to improve this summer to make your high school team? Post your answer in the comments on the video.

Step 1: Know What You Actually Need to Improve

Before you commit to a team, take stock of your game:

  • Are you hitting for enough power to get noticed?

  • Is your defense keeping you out of the lineup?

  • Do you have enough speed, consistency, or throwing strength to stand out?

The more specific you are about what needs work, the more effective your summer plan becomes.

Step 2: Choose a Team That Helps You Build

A development-focused team will:

  • Give you intentional reps in the areas you’re weak

  • Offer coaching that teaches instead of just organizing

  • Support your individual improvement goals

If the team you’re considering can’t help you improve where you’re lacking, it’s not the right one—no matter how many tournaments they play.

Step 3: Exposure Only Matters if You’re Ready

Exposure without preparation is wasted. If you’re not ready to perform, being seen doesn’t help you. Summer should be where you build what you want to showcase in fall tryouts.

Want to Improve Your Swing?

If your biggest gap is at the plate, Coach Leo’s book provides a clear, proven system to develop elite-level hitting.
