Why Parents Shouldn’t Bring Summer Baseball Stats to Fall Tryouts
Parents — let’s be clear: summer stats don’t help your player.
Showing up at fall tryouts bragging about summer league numbers is one of the fastest ways to damage your athlete’s reputation with good coaches.
Have you ever brought summer stats to a tryout? Tell us what happened in the comments.
Summer Ball Isn’t Structured Enough to Matter
Summer baseball is often chaotic:
Different rosters every weekend
Ring-chasers and guest players
Rainouts and rescheduled games
No final championship or serious competition
Coaches know this. They don’t take summer stats seriously because the competition isn’t controlled — and the numbers are usually inflated.
Coaches Care About What They See — Not What They Hear
A coach is evaluating:
Is your player noticeably stronger?
Have they improved their hitting approach?
Are they cleaner defensively?
Do they look more competitive?
They’re watching how players move, compete, and handle adversity in real time.
A stat sheet tells them nothing about who the player is today.
Summer Stats Could Get Your Player Labeled
When you push a stack of summer stats, here’s what coaches really hear:
“My player needed easy competition to shine.”
“We’re trying to convince you, not show you.”
Good coaches quietly put those players on the wrong list — the one where they look for reasons to cut, not reasons to keep.
Play Better — Don’t Talk About It
Your athlete has one job: perform better than they did last season.
Your job? Stay out of the way.
Don’t bring up summer stats. Don’t bring excuses. Let your player’s development speak louder than a padded batting average.
Why This Matters to Sore to Soaring
At Sore to Soaring, we teach players to grow, compete, and show up better than they were the year before — not hide behind empty numbers.
Real development beats inflated stats every time.
